Vaporesso GTX Coil Guide — Which Resistance Should You Buy?

Vaporesso's GTX range is one of the most useful coil families on the market, because a single coil type covers a big chunk of their line-up. If you own a Luxe or a Gen, these are almost certainly the coils you need.

The catch is choice. GTX coils come in seven different resistances, and picking the wrong one is the difference between a satisfying vape and a disappointing one. Here's how to choose.

Which kits take GTX coils

GTX coils are cross-compatible across a wide range of Vaporesso devices, including:

• Luxe X

• Luxe XR and Luxe XR Max

• Luxe XR Max 2

• Gen PT80 S

• GTX GO series

• Target series

That cross-compatibility is the range's biggest strength — upgrade your device within the Vaporesso family and your existing coils often carry over.

One important warning: GT and GTX are not the same thing. Vaporesso also makes GT Core coils for their NRG and Cascade tanks. The names look almost identical on a shelf and they do not interchange. Check the box says GTX.

The resistances, and what each one is for

Every GTX coil has a recommended wattage range. Staying inside it is the single biggest factor in how long the coil lasts and how good it tastes.

• 1.2Ω (7–12W) — the tightest, most cigarette-like draw. Ideal if you've recently switched from smoking and you're using 20mg nic salts. Sips liquid, lasts well.

• 0.8Ω (8–12W) — still MTL but slightly airier and warmer. A good next step if 1.2Ω feels too restrictive. Works nicely with 10mg salts.

• 0.6Ω (20–30W) — the middle ground, usually described as RDTL (restricted direct to lung). Noticeably more vapour while keeping some resistance in the draw. A popular all-rounder.

• 0.4Ω (26–32W) — proper direct-to-lung territory. Airy draw, plenty of vapour. Pair with 50/50 or high-VG liquid at low nicotine.

• 0.3Ω (32–45W) — more power, more warmth, more vapour. High-VG shortfills only.

• 0.2Ω (45–60W) — big clouds and intense flavour, and it will get through e-liquid quickly.

• 0.15Ω (60–75W) — the most powerful in the range, and only compatible with the Armour G and Armour GS. Don't buy this one for a Luxe.

Coils are supplied in packs of five in your chosen resistance.

How to pick, in one paragraph

If you're vaping nic salts at 10mg or 20mg and want something like a cigarette, buy 1.2Ω or 0.8Ω. If you're vaping shortfills at 3mg and want vapour, buy 0.4Ω or 0.3Ω. If you're not sure, 0.6Ω is the coil most people are happiest with, because it does a reasonable job of both.

Match this to your liquid, not just your device. High-nicotine salts in a 0.2Ω coil is an unpleasant and harsh combination — the higher the power, the lower your nicotine strength should be. Our guide to nicotine strength for beginners covers the pairings.

A note on sub-ohm coils

Anything below 1.0Ω is classified as sub-ohm. These coils draw more power, produce considerably more vapour and are aimed at more experienced vapers. They need high-VG liquid and low nicotine to be pleasant.

If you've just switched from cigarettes, start above 1.0Ω. You'll get more nicotine satisfaction from less vapour, your coils will last longer and you'll use far less liquid. What is sub-ohm vaping explains the trade-offs properly.

Making GTX coils last

The same rules apply as any mesh coil, and they matter more at higher wattages:

1. Prime every new coil — liquid onto the exposed cotton, fit, fill, then wait five minutes. How to prime a coil has the detail.

2. Stay in the lower half of the wattage range. You lose very little and gain a lot of coil life.

3. Avoid heavily sweetened liquids if you want coils to last — sweeteners caramelise onto mesh faster than anything else.

4. Don't run the tank low. Refill at a quarter rather than waiting for a dry hit.

Expect roughly one to two weeks per coil, less at the higher wattages. How long a coil lasts covers the signs it's time to change.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use GTX coils in a GT Core tank? No. Despite the similar naming they're separate families with different fittings.

What's the best GTX coil for nic salts? 1.2Ω or 0.8Ω. Both run at low wattage and give the tighter draw that suits higher-strength salts.

Why is my new GTX coil tasting burnt? Almost always insufficient priming, or running above the printed wattage range. Both are fixable next time.

How many coils come in a pack? Five, in whichever resistance you choose.

Will a 0.15Ω coil work in my Luxe X? No — that resistance is made specifically for the Armour G and Armour GS.
