If you are searching for one of these three, you are almost certainly not shopping — you are trying to work out what to do now that your device is being quietly discontinued and the pods are getting harder to find.
Here is the honest position on all three, and what we actually put in people's hands when they come in holding one.
Vype ePen 3. Vype became Vuse, and the ePen 3 has been wound down. Caps still turn up, but the flavour range has narrowed and availability is patchy and getting worse.
Vype ePod / Vuse ePod. Better supported than the ePen 3 because it carried the brand forward, but it is still a closed system — you buy sealed pods at a price the manufacturer sets, and you cannot choose your liquid.
Juul. Juul's UK presence has shrunk substantially. If you are still running one, you are on the narrowest supply of the three.
They are closed systems. You cannot refill them, you cannot choose your flavour beyond what is sold in a cap, and you pay per pod rather than per millilitre.
That is the whole problem. A sealed pod costs several pounds for a couple of millilitres. A 10ml bottle of nic salt costs a fraction of that per millilitre and gives you five times the liquid. Over a year the gap is not small — it is hundreds of pounds.
You want a refillable pod kit with a tight, cigarette-like draw and a 20mg nic salt. That combination gives you the same hit and the same simplicity, without being tied to whatever the manufacturer still chooses to make.
Two we would hand you:
Vaporesso XROS 6 Mini — 1600mAh, draw-activated, no buttons, and takes XROS pods that every shop in Britain stocks. This is the safest landing spot if you never want to be in this position again.
OXVA Xlim Go Lite — smaller and lighter, top-filling, on the wide Xlim V3 pod platform.
Both are the same size and simplicity as the device in your hand right now. Neither needs settings changed.
Fair. The upside of leaving a closed system is that you stop being limited to six flavours someone else picked. Whatever your ePen or Juul flavour was — tobacco, menthol, berry — there is a nic salt that gets close, and usually several.
Bring the old device and tell us what you were vaping. Matching a flavour is much easier in person than online, and we would rather you liked the first bottle than guessed.
There is no version of this where staying on a dying closed system is the cheaper or safer option. The refills get scarcer and the price per millilitre never improves.
Moving to a refillable costs about the same as one month of pods, and then costs a fraction to run. Both kits above are on the shelf in Duston and Kingsthorpe.
Two Northampton shops and a website, run by the same friendly team.
Try before you buy: pop in to Duston or Kingsthorpe, pick a kit up, try the draw, and we'll help you choose and set it up.
