Why Does My Vape Taste Burnt? (And How to Fix It)
That harsh burnt hit has a cause — and an easy fix. Here's why your vape tastes burnt and how to stop it happening aga…
Walk into any vape shop and you'll see e-liquid split into two camps: nic salts and freebase. Pick the wrong one for your kit and vaping can feel harsh, weak or just disappointing. Here's how to choose with confidence.
As always, this is for adult smokers and ex-smokers — if you don't smoke, don't start.
Freebase is the original, traditional form of nicotine used in e-liquid. It's been the standard for years. At higher strengths it delivers a strong throat hit, which some people like — but it can feel harsh, which is why freebase is usually vaped at lower strengths (3 to 6mg) in bigger sub-ohm devices that produce more vapour.
Nic salts use a form of nicotine that's chemically closer to how it appears in a tobacco leaf. The practical upshot: they're much smoother, even at high strengths like 20mg, and the nicotine is absorbed faster. That fast hit is why they satisfy a craving more like a cigarette does.
Throat hit: Freebase is sharp at strength; nic salts stay smooth.
Nicotine rush: Nic salts hit faster and harder for the same number.
Best strengths: Freebase low (3 to 6mg); nic salts high (10 to 20mg).
Best device: Freebase for bigger DTL kits; nic salts for small MTL and pod kits.
Best for: Freebase for flavour-chasers and cloud lovers; nic salts for switchers.
For nearly every new switcher: nic salts. They're smooth at the higher strengths you'll need to beat cravings, they hit fast, and they're designed for exactly the small, simple kits we recommend to beginners in MTL vs DTL and our Beginner's Guide.
Freebase comes into its own later, if you move to a bigger device and enjoy chasing flavour and clouds at lower nicotine.
You'll also see ratios like 50/50 or 70/30 on the bottle — that's PG to VG. PG carries flavour and throat hit; VG makes vapour. Nic salts are usually 50/50, which suits MTL kits perfectly. Bigger DTL kits use 70/30 high-VG liquids for clouds. Match the liquid to your device and you can't go far wrong.
