How to Refill Your Vape Pod or Tank Without the Mess

Temple of Vape Team · July 16, 2026

Refilling is the most common thing you'll do with a refillable vape, and once you know the knack it takes seconds with no mess. Here's how to do it cleanly and avoid the leaks and gurgles that come from doing it wrong.

Find the fill port

Most modern pods and tanks fill from the side or bottom behind a rubber bung or a sliding cover, rather than by unscrewing the whole thing. Have a look at your device — the fill point is usually obvious once you spot the little silicone plug. Filling through the right hole (not down the central airflow tube) is the single most important step.

Step by step

  1. Open the fill port — lift the bung or slide the cover.

  2. Angle the nozzle of your e-liquid bottle into the port, resting against the side.

  3. Squeeze gently and let the liquid run down the inside wall of the tank, not into the central chimney.

  4. Stop before it's completely full — leave a small air gap so the tank can breathe and seal properly.

  5. Close the port firmly and wipe any drips with a tissue.

Give a new coil time to soak

If you've just fitted a fresh coil, don't fire straight away — let the filled tank stand for five to ten minutes so the wick soaks through. Firing a dry wick gives you that harsh burnt taste; there's more on avoiding it in why does my vape taste burnt? and in our guide to changing your coil.

Avoid the central tube

Pouring liquid down the middle airflow tube is the number one cause of a gurgling, spitting vape. If it happens, you've flooded the coil — take a few pulls without firing to clear it, and next time aim for the sides.

Don't overfill

Cramming the tank right to the top leaves no air gap, which builds pressure and forces liquid out through the airflow — a classic cause of leaks. If yours is prone to it, our stop your vape leaking guide goes deeper.

Get these habits in and refilling becomes a five-second, no-mess job you barely think about.
