How Long Do Vape Pods Last? When to Replace Yours

Pod kits are the most popular way to vape in the UK, and for good reason — they're small, simple and there's very little to go wrong. The one thing people consistently get wrong is leaving the pod in too long.

Here's how long yours should actually last.

The short answer

• Prefilled pods — typically 3 to 7 days, or until the liquid runs out.

• Refillable pods with a built-in coil — typically 1 to 2 weeks.

• Refillable pods with a replaceable coil — the pod itself lasts 1 to 2 months; you change the coil inside every 1 to 2 weeks.

Which of those applies depends on your device, and it's worth knowing which you own.

Which type do you have?

Look at the bottom of your pod:

• If something unscrews or pulls out of the base, you have a replaceable-coil pod. You buy coils, and the pod is reusable for far longer.

• If it's completely sealed, the coil is built in. When the coil goes, the whole pod is replaced.

• If it came already filled with e-liquid and you can't refill it, it's a prefilled pod. You replace it when the liquid runs out.

Signs your pod needs replacing

Don't wait for it to fail completely. Replace it when you notice:

1. Flavour has gone flat or burnt. The clearest sign, and usually the first.

2. Reduced vapour at the same settings.

3. Gurgling or spitting when you draw.

4. Leaking around the base or into the mouthpiece — worth ruling out other causes first, which how to stop your vape leaking covers.

5. Discoloured liquid in a pod you've only just filled, which means residue from the old coil is bleeding into it.

6. A visibly dark, crusted coil through the pod window.

What makes pods die faster

The same things that kill coils, because a pod is mostly just a coil in a plastic housing:

• Sweetened e-liquids are the biggest factor by a wide margin. Dessert and candy flavours caramelise onto the coil and shorten pod life dramatically.

• Chain vaping doesn't give the wick time to re-saturate.

• Letting the pod run dry — even briefly — permanently scorches the cotton.

• Refilling a pod that's already past it. Once flavour has gone, a fresh fill won't bring it back; you're just wasting liquid.

• Heat. Leaving a device on a sunny windowsill or in a car thins the liquid and encourages leaking.

Getting more life from each pod

1. Prime a new pod. Fill it, then let it stand five minutes before the first puff so the wick saturates fully. This one habit makes the biggest difference.

2. Refill before it's empty. Top up at around a quarter rather than running it down.

3. Pause between puffs.

4. Stick to lighter flavours if pod life matters to you — fruits and menthols are far kinder than desserts.

5. Store it upright at room temperature.

Is it cheaper to refill?

Generally yes, and often by a lot. A refillable pod used with a bottle of e-liquid works out considerably cheaper per week than buying prefilled pods, and much cheaper again than disposables.

Frequently asked questions

How often should you change a vape pod? Prefilled pods every three to seven days. Refillable pods with a built-in coil every one to two weeks. Pods with replaceable coils last one to two months, with coil changes in between.

Can you clean a pod and reuse it? You can rinse a replaceable-coil pod with warm water and let it dry fully — that's worth doing. But you can't restore a burnt built-in coil; once the cotton is scorched, it's finished.

Why does my pod leak? Usually overfilling, a temperature change, or a worn seal. Persistent leaking from a pod that's a couple of weeks old normally means it's due for replacement.

How many refills should I get from one pod? Typically five to ten, depending on the liquid. Sweeter liquids will be at the lower end.
