Why Is My Vape Not Working? A Troubleshooting Guide
No vapour, no flavour, or a vape that won't fire? Work through these common causes and fixes before you assume your kit …
Freemax built their reputation on flavour, and the 904L mesh coils are the reason why. They're genuinely excellent coils — but the naming trips people up constantly, because "904L" describes the metal, not the fitting.
Get the series wrong and the coil simply won't fit your tank. Here's how to get it right first time.
904L is a grade of stainless steel. Freemax use it across their whole mesh coil line-up, so seeing "904L" on a box tells you nothing about compatibility.
What matters is the series letter that follows it:
904L X Series — for Fireluke tanks
904L M Series — for M Pro tanks
Those two are not interchangeable. Always check the letter.
X Series coils fit:
Fireluke 3
Fireluke 2
Fireluke M
M Series coils fit:
M Pro tank
M Pro 2 tank
M Series coils are further divided into M1, M2, M3 and M4 — these are different resistances within the same fitting, so any of them will physically fit an M Pro tank. Choosing between them is about the vape you want, not compatibility.
There's also the Fireluke Solo, which takes its own dedicated Solo replacement coils.
Within a series, the resistance determines your experience:
Lower resistance (further below 1.0Ω) — more power, warmer vapour, bigger clouds, faster liquid use. Pair with high-VG shortfills at low nicotine.
Higher resistance (closer to or above 1.0Ω) — cooler, tighter, more restrained. Better with a more balanced liquid and higher nicotine.
Freemax tanks are predominantly sub-ohm, direct-to-lung hardware. If you've just switched from cigarettes, this probably isn't the right kit to start on — a small pod device will serve you far better. What sub-ohm vaping is explains why, and MTL vs DTL covers the two styles.
Freemax mesh is superb at pulling flavour out of e-liquid, and that's exactly why sweetened liquids kill it quickly. The large mesh surface area that gives you the flavour also gives sucralose plenty of places to caramelise.
If you're running dessert, candy or heavily sweetened liquids through a Fireluke, expect noticeably shorter coil life. It isn't a fault — it's the trade-off for the flavour. Switching to a fruit or menthol for part of the week makes a real difference.
Prime thoroughly. Mesh coils have a lot of cotton to saturate. Liquid onto every visible port, then fill and wait a full five minutes. How to prime a vape coil has the detail.
Start low on wattage and work up. Beginning at the top of the range on a fresh coil is a reliable way to ruin it.
Never let the tank run low. Sub-ohm coils at high power are unforgiving of a dry wick.
Rinse the tank when you swap coils, so old residue doesn't carry over — how to clean your vape kit covers it.
Realistically, expect five to ten days from a sub-ohm mesh coil with regular use. How long a vape coil lasts covers the signs it's time.
Will an X Series coil fit an M Pro tank? No. X Series is for Fireluke tanks, M Series for M Pro tanks. They don't interchange.
What's the difference between M1, M2, M3 and M4? Different resistances within the same M Series fitting. All fit an M Pro tank; they simply run at different power levels.
Does 904L mean it lasts longer? 904L is a corrosion-resistant steel that handles heat well, and it does contribute to consistent flavour. But coil life depends far more on your e-liquid and wattage than on the alloy.
Why does my Freemax coil taste burnt after a few days? Usually sweetened e-liquid, running above the recommended wattage, or vaping with a low tank. Sweeteners are the most common cause.
What pack sizes do they come in? X Series typically in packs of five, M Series in packs of three.
We stock Freemax replacement coils including 904L X Series for Fireluke tanks, 904L M Series for M Pro tanks, and Fireluke Solo coils.
If you're not certain which tank you own, bring it into our Duston or Kingsthorpe shop and we'll match it. Browse all coils for other brands.
