Understanding Coil Resistance (Ohms) for Beginners

Temple of Vape Team · July 17, 2026

Every vape coil has a number printed on it followed by the symbol Ω (ohms) — something like 0.8Ω or 1.2Ω. It looks technical, but it's simply telling you what kind of vape that coil gives. Here's what it means in plain English.

What resistance actually does

Resistance controls how much power flows through the coil, which changes how much vapour you get and how warm it feels. The rule of thumb:

  • Lower resistance = more power, more vapour, warmer draw.

  • Higher resistance = less power, less vapour, cooler and tighter draw.

Sub-ohm vs above-ohm

Coils below 1.0Ω are called sub-ohm. They produce bigger clouds and a warmer, airier draw — a direct-to-lung style where you inhale straight into your lungs. Coils at 1.0Ω and above give a tighter, cooler mouth-to-lung draw, closer to a cigarette. If those terms are new, our MTL vs DTL guide explains the two styles in full.

Which resistance should a beginner use?

If you're switching from smoking, a higher-resistance coil (around 1.0Ω or above) is usually the better fit. It gives a tight, cigarette-like draw and works best with higher-nicotine and nic salt e-liquids — which is exactly what most switchers want. Sub-ohm coils suit bigger devices, more airflow and lower nicotine.

Match your e-liquid to the coil

Resistance and e-liquid go together. Higher-resistance MTL coils pair with thinner, higher-PG liquid and stronger nicotine; sub-ohm coils want thicker, high-VG liquid at lower strengths. The PG vs VG guide covers this pairing, and what nicotine strength should a beginner use? helps you land on the right mg.

Stay in the coil's range

Every coil has a recommended wattage range printed on it or on the box. Stick within it — too much power burns the coil out fast and gives that acrid burnt taste, while too little feels weak and cold.

Once you understand the ohm number, choosing coils and e-liquid stops being guesswork — you just pick the draw you want and match everything to it.
