Tobacco flavours divide into two groups, and knowing which you want saves a lot of trial and error.

Plain or classic tobaccos aim for a dry, straightforward taste with no sweetness. Blended tobaccos — RY4 being the best known — add caramel, vanilla or nut notes, and are considerably more approachable. Most people who say they dislike tobacco flavours have tried a plain one; the blends are a different experience.

These tend to be the flavours people run at higher nicotine strengths, and they carry it well — tobacco blends are usually smoother in the throat at 18mg or 20mg than a sharp menthol at the same strength.

They are also easy on hardware. There is very little sweetener in a plain tobacco, so coils last well and the flavour stays consistent. Blended tobaccos with heavy caramel sit somewhere between tobacco and dessert on coil life.
